La Calonica

The Azienda Agricola La Calonica is located 5 miles from Montepulciano and 6 miles from Cortona, in the verdant region of Tuscany.  The estate was founded in 1970 by the Cattani family and is currently managed by their heir, Fernando Cattani.  The estate spans over 100 acres of which 85 acres are planted with grapevines, 2.5 with olive groves and the rest with forest.  Of those 85 acres, 70% are planted to Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo, 8% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah, 2% Sauvignon Blanc. The soil composition is of clay-limestone texture. At an altitude of 1,100 feet above sea level, this microclimate of humid winter and very dry summer supports the best environment for high quality wine production. The Guyot system is used to cultivate the vines, for a density of 2,000 vines per acre and an average yield of 7 tons of grapes.
